Merle J Morris (1909-1977)
About the man for whom this annual SHS local tournament is named:
Merle was a very active and successful fisherman from the port of South Haven, Michigan. His love for boating and fishing caused him to serve as President/Commodore of the River Bend Boat Club (1959,1960,1961) as well as to be an active member of the South Haven Yacht Club. Merle was also one of the founding members of the South Haven Steelheaders Club which eventually went on to become the Michigan Salmon and Steelhead Fisherman’s Association (MSSFA) with additional Chapters throughout the State of Michigan. Merle was so beloved by the sport fishermen and Steelheaders of South Haven that, to date, he is the only departed SHS Chapter member to be honored by an annual tournament.
The South Haven Yacht Club’s fish cleaning facility was also dedicated to the memory of Merle in 1981.

While this tournament is named in honor of Merle Morris, it is also an event that has come to honor all departed SHS members. This tournament provokes us to once again share memories of the fishing triumphs and failures of our departed friends until we too, as Herman Melville once wrote, find shelter “‘Where lies the final harbor from whence we unmoor no more”.
