Fishing Lake Michigan near South Haven, Van Buren County, Michigan provides anglers the opportunity to catch steelhead, coho salmon, perch, chinook salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout and brown trout.  Shore and pier fishing also provides the same opportunities with the additions of walleye, whitefish, drum, sucker, carp, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. However, fishing on the big lake, it’s coastline or the Black River mouth in South Haven is not where the action stops.  Surrounding South Haven are various rivers, streams, tributaries and dozens of inland lakes which are home to all sorts of gamefish!

The primary river, which has its mouth in the City of South Haven is the Black River.  This river has two branches in addition to the mainstream which are known as the North Branch and South Branch.

While the northern portion of South Haven township is drained by the Black River, the southern portion is drained by Deerlick Creek and other unnamed creeks.

To the south of the City and Township of South Haven is the town of Covert which is host to Brandywine Creek whose mouth is located at Palisades Park just south of Palisades nuclear power plant.

The Paw Paw River runs through the middle of Van Buren County and near the towns of Lawrence, Hartford, Watervliet and Coloma.  The Paw Paw River eventually joins the Saint Joseph River just above its mouth on Lake Michigan at Benton Harbor, Michigan

To the north of South Haven can be found Glenn Creek and  Plummerville Creek.

Even if you don’t have full access to large bodies of water like rivers and lakes, you may still be able to enjoy a fun angling experience in a small, often overlooked stream or creek.
